NEW HAVEN — At the most recent meeting of the Town of New Haven Council, a concern was brought to the attention of the council of certain departments not being adequately staffed.
It was reported that Supervisor Johnny Oldaker brought this concern to the council, stating the wastewater and water department did not have enough staff members. Following a short discussion on the matter, council decided to move employee James Greene Jr. to the wastewater department.
It was also reported that applications will be accepted for a general laborer to fill the shortage, and applications will be accepted for this position, as well as an office position, until Sept. 18.
Also concerning the wastewater department, it was reported that the first reading of the Sewer Ordinance took place at a public meeting prior to the council meeting. It was also announced that water lines are in need of repair, and Oldaker asked council members to put this item on a later agenda for further discussion.
In other council news, the refinancing of the town’s police jeep was approved with a first from Councilwoman Amy Ferguson and a second from Councilman Jim Elias. Motion carried. It was also announced that the town’s garbage truck needs to be cleaned out over top of the dry beds and not just on the driveway. The street department is also in need of a new riding lawn mower.
Council also discussed employee Janet May, stating May asked to use 48 hours of vacation, with 16 hours paid and 32 hours unpaid. A motion was made to accept by Councilwoman Sarah Gibbs and a second from Ferguson. Motion carried.
The following building permits were also presented to the council:
Permit number 692, James Lockhart, for repairing shingles. Approved with a first from Gibbs and a second from Elias. Motion carried with one abstention due to being on zoning board.
Permit number 693, Time Stone, for a privacy fence between properties. Approved with a first from Councilwoman Jessica Howard and a second from Ferguson. Motion carried with one abstention due to being on zoning board.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved with a first from Gibbs and a second from Elias. Accounts payable were also approved with a first from Elias and a second from Ferguson. The financial report was also approved with a first from Elias and a second from Councilman Kenneth Vickers. Elias also made a motion to only receive the first page of the financial report with a second from Vickers. All motions carried.
In addition to Mayor George Gibbs, council members present were Jessica Howard, Sarah Gibbs, Kenneth Vickers, Jim Elias, Amy Ferguson, and Recorder Roberta Hysell.
The Town of New Haven Council will meet again at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20, it the town hall.
