RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The University of Rio Grande dominated the University of Pikeville at the net and cruised to a 3-0 win over the visiting Bears, Tuesday night, in Mid-South Conference volleyball action at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The RedStorm (14-7, 5-2 MSC), who won for the 11th time in its last 13 outings, notched the sweep by scores of 25-12, 25-10, 25-14.
Head coach Billina Donaldson’s squad recorded an impressive .424 hitting percentage in the match, piling up 47 kills and just 11 errors in 85 total attacks.
Pikeville (3-13, 0-7), which lost for the sixth straight time, finished with more errors (12) than it did kills (10) and a -.031 hitting percentage. The Bears entered the match dead last in the conference in hitting percentage.
After dropping game one, Pikeville actually held a 5-3 edge early in game two, but Rio scored 15 of the next 16 points to win going away.
The Bears also led game three, 14-13, before the RedStorm finished off the sweep by tallying 12 consecutive points.
Senior outside hitter Whitney Smith had 17 kills to pace the winning effort, while senior middle blocker Erin Sherman added 15 kills and a team-best four blocks.
Junior defensive specialist Nicole Ogg added nine digs in the victory, while junior setters Kelsey Martin and Kayla Landaker contributed 18 and 16 assists, respectively.
Landaker also had a match-high three service aces.
Chelsea Staples had four kills and seven blocks to lead UPike, while Stephanie Dounseroux had seven assists and Samantha Ayers had seven digs.
