Sheriff’s dept. remodel back on track

POINT PLEASANT — The remodel of the new sheriff’s department is back on schedule with a March 2014 completion date.

This according to Tom Cloer of Chapman Technical Group. Cloer gave an update on the project at Thursday’s Mason County Commission meeting. The project picked up speed after drainage issues were resolved and the first floor concrete was poured.

Cloer said the installation of sprinklers, as well as masonry work, was 95 percent complete. Installing gypsum board as well as the electrical rough in were 75 percent complete, while the plumbing rough in was 95 percent complete. Work on the roof has also been completed though work on gutters and downspouts remained. Cloer said the water tap had been installed and the sewer tap should be soon.

Also, the gas and electric hookups were being scheduled. The installation of the elevator should also begin in the next two weeks - the elevator will be assembled in pieces. Several doors have been put in as well as the front entrance door. Cloer guessed the windows would arrive on site within the next two weeks. The next informal construction meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 26. County Administrator John Gerlach guessed there were around 10-15 workers on site on an average basis.

County Commissioner Rick Handley said the third floor apartment had been kept intact but the commission hasn’t decided yet whether or not it will rent the space for outside income.

Scott Stewart from Appalachian Electric Power, spoke with the commission to touch base. He told the commission about a free energy saving assessment program offered to homeowners called the Homestart Program - details can be found at or call 1-888-446-7719. Stewart also said AEP is currently trying to get funding and approval from the Public Service Commission to get back into a four-year tree trimming schedule state wide. Handley also thanked AEP for purchasing livestock at the Mason County Fair.

County Clerk Diana Cromley reminded commissioners of the 4 p.m., Dec. 5 meeting in the commission room to discuss precincts.

Commissioners approved adjusting the budget appropriations to include $25,000 to the Mason County PSD for a project at Rolling Acres. Also approved into the budget, the $61,296.41 the county received from the state’s Tax Loss Restoration Fund. The Ambulance Authority will be receiving an additional $30,000 and all six fire departments in the county will each be receiving $5,000 from the funds.

Earlier this year, the Ambulance Authority and fire departments, along with several other entities, took an across the board 50 percent cut in county funding. The Ambulance Authority went from $120,000 the previous fiscal year to $60,000 and now with the additional $30,000, will be receiving a total of $90,000 from the county.

Before adopting the current budget, Commissioners Tracy Doolittle, Miles Epling and Handley agreed that if the county received any additional, unexpected tax dollars, those would first be distributed to the Ambulance Authority and the local fire departments.

The commission will hold its first meeting of 2014 at 2 p.m., Jan. 2 and commissioners are inviting local legislators to the meeting to discuss issues important to the county in 2014.

Commissioners wished the Point Pleasant Big Blacks and the Wahama White Falcons good luck on their upcoming playoff round football games.
