School board votes on personnel, policy

POINT PLEASANT — A recent meeting of the Mason County Board of Education included votes on personnel matters and policies.


In regards to personnel, the following motions were approved:


Grant parental leave for Amanda Cooper, teacher, Wahama Jr/Sr High, for a maximum of 12 weeks unpaid leave. Approve family medical leave for Cathy Smith, teacher, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, for a maximum of 12 weeks unpaid leave. Approve to rescind the transfer of Kimberly Hunt, from second-grade teacher at Point Pleasant Primary, to kindergarten teacher at Point Pleasant Primary, effective 2014-15 school year. Approve the employment of Michael Holmes, general science grades 7-12/chemistry at Hannan Jr/Sr High School, effective March 3, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Darrell Black, Jordan Bradford, Madelyn Coalson, Lynnita Edmonds, Lora Euler, Ronald Siders and Debra Wallace as substitute teachers for the 2013-14 school year, county will be the funding source.


Approve family medical leave for Joey Thompson, bus operator, transportation department, for a maximum of 12 weeks unpaid leave. Approve the transfer of Charles McComas, .5 custodian, Leon Elementary to custodian, New Haven Elementary, effective Feb. 20, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Gerard Bielinski, ACT test prep coach, Hannan Jr/Sr High, effective Feb. 20, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Adam Watson, homebound instructor, Hannan Jr/Sr High, effective Feb. 20, Special Education is the funding source. Approve the employment of Tad Greathouse, head middle school baseball coach, Hannan Jr/Sr High, for the 2013-14 school year, effective Feb. 20, county will be the funding source.


Approve the employment of Denver Casto, athletic assistant, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, for the 2013-14 school year, effective Feb. 20, this is an unpaid position. Approve the employment of Chris O’Dell, head junior high football coach, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective for the 2014-15 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Dave Barr, varsity football coach, Wahama Jr/Sr High, effective for the 2014-15 school year, county will be the funding source.


In terms of policy: Deleted policy #3126 — Beginning Educator Internship program. Recommended the board place Policy #1530 — evaluation of central office personnel — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #1530.01 — evaluation of school leaders — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #3120 — employment of professional personnel, on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #3130.01 — transfer — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #3131 — reduction in force-classroom teacher and other professional personnel — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #3132 — vVacancies-professional positions — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #3220 — staff evaluation — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #4130 — assignment and transfer of service personnel — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #4250 — extra duty assignments — on a 10-day review and comment period. Recommended the board place Policy #8390 — use of service animals — on a 10-day review and comment period.


In other business: Approved the out of county transfer request for a Mason County student to attend school in Jackson County for the 2014-15 school year.


In addition to Superintendent Suzanne Dickens, also in attendance were board members Paul Sayre, Dale Shobe, Randy Searls, Tom Nunnery and Greg Fowler.
