MASON — Council members of the town of Mason recently discussed illegally parked cars on sidewalks.
It was reported that council members not only want the new sidewalks to be cleared for pedestrians and remain in good condition, but parking on the sidewalk is against state code. Mayor Mindy Kearns reported that police will continue to warn those who park there, and offenders will be ticketed after that.
Also regarding sidewalks, Kearns reported the grant for phase three of the most recent improvement project has been submitted, which includes the completion of the sidewalks running from Foster Street to Anderson Street, and from the Walmart plaza to Wahama High School.
Kearns also noted there have been numerous complaints regarding cats around town. She brought up the fact that the town of Mason has an ordinance against cats running wild and that live traps have been purchased to help relieve this problem.
Council member Sarah Stover also updated members on the Tax Offset Program. This program allows Council to acquire unpaid fines from residents’ tax refunds. This program has already been set in motion, and Kearns reported that Council has already received some payment for unpaid fines.
Council also voted for a spring cleanup for the town, which will take place from April 16-20. More information will be reported on the clean-up as details become available.
In other Council business, members voted to donate $100 to the Wahama After-Prom Party. Also discussed was the hiring of an employee to mow grass for town property, such as parks and ditch lines. Kearns stated that final notices have been sent to businesses for late B & O tax payments, and members also commented on the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt, which will take place on March 31 at the town park. The rain date will be April 7.
Council members present were James Pauley, Nick Northup, Michelle Pearson, Sarah Stover and Mayor Mindy Kearns. Absent were Council member Marty Yeager and Recorder Deann Russell.
The next council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on March 1.
