ASHTON — FFA programs in Mason County are alive and well with students from Hannan High School (HHS) recently working to promote and spread the word about the organization during National FFA week.
It was reported that members celebrated each day by going to school dressed up to support FFA. From cowboy to camo, to the official FFA colors of “national blue and corn gold,” students reportedly had fun with their agricultural-related get ups. According to Jenna Gilliam, Hannan’s Agriculture Education Instructor and the Hannan FFA Advisor, the students worked very hard to get the word out about FFA and promoting thier local chapter.
As part of FFA week, special guest Kelsey Flinn, WV Regional FFA Vice President, came to speak with Hannan students all day and had numerous activities planned. Teachers and staff members at HHS also received a different treat each day, delivered by the FFA students. On Friday of FFA week, the teachers received a payday with a special note that said, “Everyone could use an extra payday.”
Students at Ashton Elementary also received a big treat from the FFA chapter on Friday morning. Four lessons were presented to each third grade class that included food products and related them to agriculture education. For example, with an apple lesson, Hannan students asked the third graders how much of the earth did they think produced food. The third graders also enjoyed an ice cream making lesson as a fun way of learning about the dairy industry.
“We are providing fun and exciting lessons to these young students,” Gilliam said. “They are learning about the dairy industry and West Virginias agriculture through our lessons, as well as enjoying healthy food.”
Those educating Mr. Green’s, Ms. Byus’ and Ms. Rowe’s third grade classes included Joseph Cupp, Leandra Harper (Reporter), Latosha Stover (Reporter), Kandis Ronk (Secretary), Bekah Bush, Kaitlynn Hughes (President), Tyler Jenkins, Tiffany Adkins, Charles Sauls, Pamela Black, Adam Wilson, Tristan Johnson, Wynston Lloyd (Treasurer), Caleb Shaw (Vice President), Dalaina McLaughlin and Josh Coon.
