POINT PLEASANT — Turkey Day is quickly approaching in Mason County.

And to celebrate the holiday of giving thanks, two area churches will be hosting Thanksgiving dinners.

The Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, located on 8th and Main St., will hold their annual free community Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. The menu includes turkey, dressing and all of the trimmings. In addition, door prizes will be given during the meal. According to event organizers, everyone is welcome to attend the dinner.

Delivery meals also will be provided for shut-ins only. All calls for delivery dinners must be received by Monday, Nov. 23. Calls will not be accepted the day of the dinner. For more information, call 304-675-2170 or 304-675-4883.

The First Church of God, located at 2401 Jefferson Ave. in Point Pleasant, also will host a Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, Nov. 26, which is Thanksgiving Day. Yvonne Swisher, a member of the church and wife of Pastor Carl Swisher, organizes the dinner along with other members of the church’s congregation. According to Swisher, the church has hosted a Thanksgiving meal for the past four years.

“We don’t want anybody to be alone on Thanksgiving,” she said. “We had some older people in the church that would be alone so we decided to do a dinner.”

She emphasized that the free traditional meal is planned for those in the community who do not have family to spend the holiday with or for those who simply cannot afford to purchase food. The meal’s menu will include turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and pumpkin pie. Dinner will be served between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. According to Swisher, members of the congregation donate and prepare all of the food. For shut-ins unable to attend the dinner, carry out service will be available.

Swisher described the dinner as growing over the years, and fondly recalled the first dinner because one of the volunteers that helped deliver meals was saved.

“(The dinner) is really a church effort,” she said.
