POINT PLEASANT — The key to living a longer, happy life is to be healthy.

And to do this, a healthy heart is needed. The Mason County Family Resource Network will host a Wellness for Life Heart Seminar on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at the First Church of the Nazarene, located at 2500 Mt. Vernon Ave. in Point Pleasant.

The event, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m., will discuss the various ways to maintain a healthy heart. Steve Burris, the event’s keynote speaker, will talk about a heart transplant and a healthy heart experience. Diana Riddle of the Mason County Health Department also will be on hand to do a presentation entitled “Do You Know Your Numbers?” The presentation will detail the importance of knowing what a healthy blood pressure is as well as the proper cholesterol levels and body mass index (BMI). In addition, Riddle will discuss the healthy numbers to have for waist circumference and the correct amount of exercise needed each week.

According to the American Heart Association, good nutrition is essential for heart health. Making small changes to diet plans, such as eliminating unnecessary fats, can help with maintaining a healthy heart. Exercises, such as swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, dancing and walking also help the heart. Whether it is included in a structured exercise program or part of a daily routine, all physical activity is important.

The heart seminar coincides with American Heart Month, which has been celebrated in February since 1963. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are the nation’s number one killer. The goal of American Heart Month is to raise funds for research and education as well as pass along information regarding heart disease and stroke.
