Last weekend Brandon Sweeney of Point Pleasant went up against 10 finalists in the West Virginia Gospel Idol Competition in Charleston and took home second place.
Sponsored by the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE), the competition featured those 10 finalists chosen from a field of applicants who auditioned via the internet.
The judges referred to Sweeney’s song selection, “Somebody’s Praying” as a perfect song for him. They also said, “they closed their eyes and could imagine Kenny Rogers on stage and he had the stage presence of an Idol winner.”
First Place and Viewer’s Choice went to First Baptist Church of Charleston Breaking Ground Dance Ministry and Third Place was Heather Blankenship of Ripley.
The evening served as a worship service and a way to promote organ donation.
Brandy Barkey Sweeney, a heart recipient, also from Point Pleasant and Lisa Johnson, an organ donor mom from Ripley, were guest speakers during the event. To register as an organ donor, go online to www.CORE.org
