The Functional Academics classes at Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School recently held its annual Pinewood Derby.
Students spent two weeks on activities to design, sand and paint their individual cars. They discussed aerodynamics and how to make the cars faster. Much anticipation surrounded the event, according to organizers. Joe Smith of J&R Auto Repair obtained sponsorship for buying the cars and trophies from City Ice and Fuel and Nationwide Insurance.
The event began with the singing of the National Anthem by Maddie Boswell. Maddie and Hayley Russell served as peer buddies for the day. Students raced their cars for most of the day in a double elimination competition. Brook Kapp from City Ice and Fuel and John Parrack of Nationwide Insurance ran the starting gate. The finish line was officiated by Jay Parrack and Donald Miller. Shane Newell and Lowell Gallespie from Piggly Wiggly were also on hand to run a few races with the Piggly Wiggly car.
The fastest car of the day belonged to Sky Saber and was awarded the Number One Speed trophy. Second place in Speed was Jerry Fillinger with his Five Knights at Freddy’s car. And third place in speed was Rachel Sims with her Sponge Bob car.
Students were also awarded trophies for their cars appearance as follows: Best Design: First Place Derek Schwartz, Second Place Hope Cook, Third Place Sky Saber. Best Paint: First Place Donna Lanham, Second Place Chris Sargent, Third Place Michael Harper.
Most Original: First Place Rachel Sims, Second Place Tyler Bright, Third Place Jerry Fillinger. Most Unusual: First Place Heather Anderson, Second Place Mariah Nowlin. Coolest: First Place Steven Casto, Second Place Nick Taylor.
