POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Who works on the river? Local students, from both Mason and Gallia counties, will soon know the answer.
For the third consecutive year, RiverWorks Discovery is bringing their career awareness program to the Point Pleasant River Museum and Learning Center. Titled “Who Works the River,” the goal of this event is to create awareness of an entire job field that many are likely unaware of, and is targeted towards juniors and seniors in high school. It will take place on March 22 at the river museum.
The RiverWorks Discovery program has existed since 2011 and has grown into 15 cities. Locally, students from Point Pleasant High School and Buckeye Hills Career Center will be attending.
“The day always involves a mini career fair where students meet with HR representatives from local businesses” Errin Howard, from RiverWorks Discovery, said.
As of March 14, 10 separate businesses and organizations have committed to being present and teaching students about their role in the river-based economy. They include; AEP River Transportation Division, ACBL (American Commercial Barge Line), Amherst Madison, Marathon Petroleum Company, Mount West Community and Technical College, Murray Transportation, Superior Marine, USACE (United States Army Corps of Engineers), USCG (United States Coast Guard), and USCG Auxiliary Volunteer Group.
The second half of the day will be spent touring an Amherst Madison towboat, as well as deckhand training with AEP. Students will not only be connected with various companies and training opportunities, but they will get to experience first hand what it is like to work on the river. With nearly 130 students registered to go, Howard expects a big success for local students.
“Young people are grasping for something they can get interested in,” Howard said. “Something that can make them feel vital and important. This field trip may change their life.”
Howard wants to put the youth that attend RiverWorks events on the path to success. According to her, the river industry is progressive and ripe with opportunity for those willing to work hard.
