MASON — A team of fishermen has the opportunity to win $1,500, all while helping local children, when the 27th annual Bend Area C.A.R.E. Catfish Tournament is held.
Set for June 3 on the Gallipolis pool of the Ohio River, at the Mason levee, all proceeds from the tournament will go to the “Kids for Christmas” program. The program provides clothing and gifts for needy children during the holidays. The catfish tournament serves as the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, according to Elvis Zerkle, C.A.R.E. member.
The tournament starts at 7 a.m. in the Stewart-Johnson V.F.W./Lottie Jenks Memorial Park. It will end with the weigh-in at 4 p.m. Check-in and registration will be held from 5 to 6:15 a.m., with the rules being read at 6:30 a.m.
Entries will be cut off at 125 boats. Up to a four-member team will be accepted for each boat, and participants can be any age. All participants must have a valid fishing license.
There will be a payback of over $4,000, with the first place team winning $1,500; second place, $800; third place, $600; fourth place, $400; and fifth place, $200. Winners are determined by the most weight.
Other prizes include first place father/daughter or son, $50 and the R.J. Roush Memorial trophy, and Biggest Cat, $500. There will also be a number of “anything goes” categories that will be announced the day of the tournament.
Pre-registration is accepted through May 31 and is $50 per two-person team, and an additional $25 per person, up to four total. There is no charge for children 10 years and under. Registration after May 31 is $60 for a two-member team, and $30 for each additional person. Even if pre-registered, all teams must register in person by 6:30 a.m. the morning of the tourney.
Children’s games will also be featured throughout the day at the park.
