Board of education approves agenda items

POINT PLEASANT — The Mason County Board of Education recently met in regular session with the majority of the motions voted upon dealing with personnel.

Board Members attending were Jared Billings, Paul F. Sayre, Dale Shobe, Tom Nunnery, Greg D. Fowler.

Motions approved include:

Accept the resignation of Deborah Wilson, second grade teacher, Ashton Elementary, effective Oct. 31 due to retirement. Accept the resignation of William Smith, sixth grade teacher, New Haven Elementary, effective Oct. 5. Approve the transfer of Lauren Gilley, second grade teacher, New Haven Elementary, to fourth grade teacher, Point Pleasant Intermediate School, effective 2016-17 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the transfer of Sarah Walker, fifth grade teacher, Ashton Elementary, to LD/BD/MI/AU teacher (pending permit agreement), Ashton Elementary, effective 2016-17 school year, special education will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Alicia Bentz, fourth grade teacher, Point Pleasant Intermediate School, effective Oct. 15, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Bradley Clay, social studies teacher, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective Oct. 15, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Abigail Bush, Margaret Endicott, Brittany Ray, Jenni Starkey, Myra Williams, and Emily Thompson, as substitute teachers for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source.

Accept the resignation of Kevin Williamson, substitute maintenance worker, effective Oct. 28. Approve the employment of Shawn Absten, Zach Ball, Peggy Johnson, Amber Mayes, Richard Ohlinger, Josh Selman, and Kevin Williamson, as substitute custodians for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Brittany Dangerfield, Aimee LaRose, Lucinda Jordan, and Amy Miller, as substitute secretaries for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source. Accept the resignation of Amy Grady, homebound/alternative education teacher, on an as needed basis, effective Sept. 29. Accept the resignation of Michael Wolfe, girls varsity basketball coach, Wahama Jr/Sr High, effective Sept. 21.

Approve the employment of Lisa Bryant and Marybeth Pyles, homebound/alternative education, on an as needed basis, effective 2015-16 school year, special education will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Mona Romans, Title I interventionist/ELA after school, Hannan Jr/Sr High, effective Oct. 15, Title I will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Nakita Garnes, interventionist, Roosevelt Elementary, effective Oct. 15, Step VII will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Penni Grubb, site based coordinator, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective Oct. 15, special education will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Leah Hatfield, Sail Ahead Early Literacy Coordinator, Ashton Elementary, effective Oct. 15, Early Literacy Grant will be the funding source. Approve the placement of Layne Thompson, athletic assistant, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, for the 2015-16 school year, this is an unpaid position. Approve the employment of Michael Wolfe, assistant junior high softball coach, Wahama Jr/Sr High, effective 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source.

Approve McClures Family Restaurant, Pleasant Valley Closet, Arby’s, and Lakin Hospital, as work based learning sites, effective thru Sept. 30. Approve volunteers from Beale Elementary, Hannan Jr/Sr High, Mason County Career Center, New Haven Elementary, Point Pleasant Intermediate School, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, Point Pleasant Primary School, Roosevelt Elementary, and Wahama Jr/Sr High, for the 2015-16 school year. Approve the request for an out-of-state student to attend school in Mason County for the 2015-16 school year, out-of-state tuition will apply. Approve the request for a student from Putnam County to attend school in Mason County for the 2015-16 school year.

Approve out-of-state travel for members of Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School Dance Team, Ruthie Sheets, and approved volunteers, to travel to Memphis, Tenn., Dec. 30 through Jan. 3, 2016, to perform at the Liberty Bowl and Parade in, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High Dance team will be the funding source. Approve out-of-state travel for Hannan Jr/Sr High FFA students, Mr. Douthit, and approved volunteers, to travel to Louisville, Ky., to attend a National FFA Convention from Oct. 27 – Oct. 31, 2015. Hannan Jr/Sr High General Levy and Perkins monies will be the funding source. Approve professional leave out-of-state travel for Rachel Reynolds, to attend National Association for Music Education National Conference in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 24 – Oct. 27, Music Educators Association and school monies will be the funding source.

Approve the placement of Destiny Brown and Kelsey McDaniel, Rio Grande University Students, to do student teaching in Mason County Schools for the 2015 fall semester.

Approve the ratification of orders issued, transfers, and supplements. Check numbers 91238 thru 91442. Purchase Card check numbers 1481 thru 1502. Total Amount: $1,084,781.67. Approve the ratification of check number 91443, to Greg Fowler, in the amount of $104 – Fowler abstained from voting. Approve the ratification of check number 91444, to Thomas Nunnery, in the amount of $99 – Nunnery abstained from voting. Approve the ratification of check number 91445, to Paul Sayre, in the amount of $112.65 – Sayre abstained from voting.

Also approved was the lowest submitted bid from Mid-Atlantic Construction, for renovations to the new central office. As previously reported, Mid-Atlantic’s bid was $1,035,150. There were seven bids received on the project. The vote was unanimous.
