NEW HAVEN — New Haven residents interested in running for office in the 2016 municipal election can begin filing in just a little over a week, according to Recorder Roberta Hysell.
The filing period will be held from Monday, Jan. 11 through Saturday, Jan. 30. The election is slated for Tues., June 7. Elected will be a mayor, recorder, and five council members.
Present town officials include Mayor Charles Yonker, Recorder Hysell, and council members Ken Vickers, Jim Elias, Smitty Jarrell, Amy Gordon, and Jessica Howard.
Mayor Yonker could not be reached for comment on whether he will seek re-election. This is his first term in the top position, being elected in 2014.
Hysell said she will be seeking another term as recorder. She was appointed to the position in 2011, and then won bids in both the 2012 and 2014 elections.
The present officials have worked on a number of projects since taking office. Targeting several unsightly and abandoned properties, they have been successful in having a number of them razed. They have also purchased a new police cruiser and have an ongoing water project in the works, as well as other projects.
Those wishing to run for office can sign up at the town hall Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no filing fee. The date for any candidate wishing to withdraw from the election is Feb. 16, and new officials will take office on July 1 for a two-year term.
