School board approves personnel

POINT PLEASANT — The Mason County Board of Education is back at work after the winter break and has been voting upon various agenda items, including personnel and policies.

School board members in attendance at the most recent, regular meeting were Greg Fowler, Dale Shobe, Jared Billings, Thomas Nunnery, Paul Sayre.

The following agenda items were voted upon and approved:

Approve the transfer of Ashley Buckle, Title I teacher, Beale Elementary, to second grade teacher, Ashton Elementary, effective 2016-17 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the transfer of Jared Taylor, teacher, Mason County School for Success, to LD/BD/MI/AU teacher (pending permit agreement), Hannan Jr/Sr High, effective 2016-17 school year, special education will be the funding source. Approve the transfer of Melinda Tyree, 7-12 grade mathematics teacher, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, to 7-12 mathematics teacher, Wahama Jr/Sr High, effective 2016-17 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Stella Buoy, LD/BD/MI/AU teacher (pending permit agreement), Leon Elementary, effective Jan. 14, special education will be the funding source.

Approve the employment of Elena Goldblum, counselor, Ashton Elementary, effective Jan. 14, Title I will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Emily Hall, band/music teacher, New Haven Elementary/Wahama Jr/Sr High, effective Jan. 14, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Millicent Kimble, Title I/interventionist teacher (pending permit agreement), Hannan Jr/Sr High, effective Jan. 14, Title I will be the funding source.

Approve the employment of Cheryl Meadows, third grade teacher, Point Pleasant Intermediate School, effective 2016-17 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Ruth Ann Sheets, counselor (pending permit agreement), Leon Elementary, effective Jan. 14, Title I will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Deborah Allen, Kayla Shaffer, and Jennifer Stewart, as substitute teachers for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source.

Grant FMLA for Beth Gay, cook, Ashton Elementary, for a maximum of 12 weeks unpaid leave. Grant FMLA for James M. Stanley, custodian, Point Pleasant Intermediate School, for a maximum of 12 weeks unpaid leave. Accept the resignation of Dorothy Cook, cook at Point Pleasant Primary School, effective June 30, due to retirement. Accept the resignation of Sharon Stover, bus operator, effective June 30, due to retirement.

Approve the transfer of Shelia Flora, aide, Central Office Itinerant (Ashton Elementary), to aide, Central Office Itinerant (Hannan Jr/Sr High), effective Jan. 14, special education will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Jeremiah Hoffman, substitute mechanic, for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of William Zuspan, Assistant Girls’ Basketball/JV Coach, Wahama Jr/Sr High, effective for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the placement of Jayna Lowery, Christopher Pinkerton, and Ian Smith as athletic assistants, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, 2015-16 school year, these are unpaid positions.

Approve list of drivers for the 2015-16 school year. Their driving records have be checked by the West Virginia Motor Vehicles Division and the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. List is as follows: Blain, Andrew; Clendenen, Amy; Herdman, Charles; Hunt, Robert; Fisher, Catherine; Foreman, Rita; Jones, Brett; Kearns, Ricky; King, Carla; Mitchell, Granville; Pinkerton, Amy; Pinkerton, Christopher; Richardson, Dana; Roush, Jodie; Russell, Ryan; Serevicz, Philip; Smith, Ian.

Approve volunteers from New Haven Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary, for the 2015-16 school year: New Haven – Bayce, Bertha; Casto, Racheal; Darst, Corey; Garrity, Stacy; Harris, Stacy; Pickens, Christopher. Roosevelt – Bechtle II, Howard; Darst, Brittany.

Approve out of state travel for Andrea Henderson, JoAnn Thomas, Joyce Banks, and Chaperones, to take Point Pleasant Intermediate Special Needs Students to Great Wolfe Lodge in Mason, Ohio, to participate in water-based therapy exercises, from Feb. 23-24, Robert and Louise Claflin Foundation will be the funding source.

Approve the request for two Mason County Students to attend school in Jackson County for the 2016-17 school year.

Approve the placement of Allison Stewart, a Marshall University Student, to do student teaching in Mason County Schools for the spring semester.

Approve the following policies: Intra-State Enrollment; Intra-County Open Enrollment; Attendance.

Approve the Memorandum of Understanding between the Administrative Office of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, the Fifth Judicial Circuit, and the Mason County Board of Education to provide employment of a school-based probation officer for the year (ending June 30). Funding source will be a grant provided by the West Virginia Department of Education (75 percent) and county money (25 percent).

Approve Professional Personnel and Service Personnel who qualify for the $500 bonus for early retirement notification for the 2015-16 school year.

Approve the ratification of orders issued, transfers, and supplements. Check numbers 92192 thru 92319 and Purchase Card check numbers 1635 thru 1660. Total Amount: $959,242.27.

Approve the ratification of check number 92320, to Paul Sayre, in the amount of $305.90. Sayre abstained from the vote.

Approve the Superintendent’s recommendation that an unidentified student must be expelled for a minimum of 12 consecutive months from at least Jan. 12, 2016 to Jan. 11, 2017, subject to terms set forth within WV Code 18A-5-1a, paragraph (g).

The next regular business meeting is at 6 p.m., tonight at the Mason County Career Center/Hartley Building.
