School board votes on personnel issues

POINT PLEASANT — The most recent, regular meeting of the Mason County Board of Education focused mainly on personnel issues.

Board Members Greg Fowler, Dale Shobe, Jared Billings, Thomas Nunnery and Paul Sayre were in attendance and passed the following motions:

Approve David Rankin as an approved driver for the 2015-16 school year; his driving record has been checked by the West Virginia Motor Vehicles Divison. Grant parental leave for Blair Bumgarner, teacher, Leon Elementary, for a maximum of 12 weeks unpaid leave. Accept the resignation of John Hammonds, LD/BD/MI/AU teacher, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School, effective Jan. 8, 2016. Accept resignation of Deborah Painter, special education teacher, Mason County Career Center, effective June 30, 2016, due to retirement. Accept the resignation of Angela Roach, math teacher, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective August 1, 2016. Accept the resignation of Barbara Scarberry, Career Works Skills Training Work Based Teacher, Mason County Career Center, effective June 30, 2016, due to retirement. Accept the resignation of Jeff Vogt, sixth grade teacher, New Haven Elementary, effective June 30, 2016, due to retirement. Approve the employment of Abigail Holleran, 7-12 mathematics teacher, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective January 28, 2016, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Seth Neal, as substitute teacher, for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source.

Grant FMLA for Summer Mitchell, aide, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, for a maximum of 12 weeks unpaid leave. Approve the transfer of Clifford Hart, custodian, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, to custodian, Beale Elementary, effective January 28, 2016, county will be the funding source. Approve the transfer of Karen Wamsley, aide/ECCAT, Leon Elementary, to aide/ECCAT, Point Pleasant Primary School, effective January 28, 2016, county will be the funding source. Approve the employment of Joshua Selman, general maintenance/grounds keeper/plumber II, effective January 28, 2016, county will be the funding source.

Approve the employment of Lawhana Smithson, cook, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective January 28, 2016, county will be the funding source. Accept the resignation of John Hammonds, 8th grade boys basketball coach, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective January 8, 2016. Accept the resignation of Stephanie Morrow, Jr High Assistant Baseball Coach, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective January 11, 2016. Approve the employment of Judith Camden, mathematics interventionist, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School, effective January 28, 2016, Step VII will be the funding source.

Approve the employment of Deborah Cottrill, Homeless Interventionist, Central Office Itinerant, effective January 28, 2016, “Homeless Monies” will be the funding source. Approve the employment of David Jordan, Jr. High Head Track Coach, Hannan Jr/Sr High, effective for the 2015-16 school year, county will be the funding source. Approve the placement of Stephen Frum, athletic assistant, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, for the 2015-16 school year, this is an unpaid position.

Approve the following county CSO’s for Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High for the 2016/17 school year: Advanced Physical Education, Weight Training I, Weight Training II, Weight Training III, Weight Training IV. Place Chad Nance, a Marshall University student, in a Mason County School, to do his Level II Clinical Experience beginning Feb. 8, 2016. Approve the following volunteers from New Haven Elementary, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High and Wahama Jr/Sr High for the 2015/16 school year: New Haven – Jones, Eric; Jones, Shannon; Scurlock, Shawn. PPJSHS: Parsons, Jan; Tatterson, Linda. Wahama: Bissell, Royce; Duncan, Christopher; Duncan, Penny; Hickel, Mark; Knopp, April; Miller, Edward; Miller, Susan; Sayre, Gary; Sayre, Tammy.

Approve the ratification of orders issued, transfers and supplements with check numbers 92321 thru 92422, and purchase card check numbers 1661 thru 1687 for total amount: $855,320.75.

The next regular business meetings are: 6 p.m., Feb. 9, Mason County Career Center/Hartley Building; 6 p.m., Feb. 23, Mason County Career Center/Hartley Building.
