More candidates file in local, county races

POINT PLEASANT — More local candidates have filed for a space on the May 10 primary ballot after mailing in their materials via the U.S. Postal Service.

Potential candidates could mail their filing papers and fees as long as these materials were postmarked by midnight, Jan. 31. When the mail arrived this week in the office of Mason County Clerk Diana Cromley, three more candidates had filed for the school board and one filed for sheriff.

In the race for two seats which are up for grabs on the Mason County Board of Education, the following new candidates have filed: Leigh Ann Gardner, Point Pleasant, District III. Pamela Jean Muncy, Gallipolis Ferry, District IV. Vicki A. Ohlinger, New Haven, District I. These three candidates will be on the ticket with the following: John David Morgan, Point Pleasant, District III. James “JR” Neal, Gallipolis Ferry, District IV. Rhonda Tennant, Letart, District I. Mack McCarty, Ashton, District IV, Meagan Bonecutter, Point Pleasant, District III. The two seats open for these races are currently held by Tom Nunnery and Paul Sayre who did not file for reelection. Eligible candidates had to live in districts one, three or four.

The other new filing is in the race for sheriff on the democrat ticket. Marc Kearns, Letart, has filed and will run against Incumbent Greg Powers, D-Point Pleasant and Jesse Raike, D-Gallipolis Ferry. Also filing in this race on the GOP ticket are Curtis Curt McConihay, R-Point Pleasant and Joe Frank, R-Leon.

Candidates in other county races remain unchanged from what was reported in Saturday’s edition but are as follows:

County commission: GOP candidates are Sam Nibert, R-Gallipolis Ferry, District IV. Freddie Green, R-Fraziers Bottom, District IV, Scott Cadle, R-Letart, District I, and Matt Roush, R-Letart, District I. Democrats who have filed in this race are Rick Pearson, D-Mason, District I, Ray Varian, D-Mason, District I and Danny Elias, D-Letart, District I. These candidates are vying for the seat currently held by Commissioner Miles Epling who did not seek reelection.

Assessor: Incumbent Ron Hickman, D-Point Pleasant. County Clerk: Incumbent Diana Cromley, D-Point Pleasant. Circuit Clerk: Incumbent Bill Withers, D-Ashton. Prosecuting Attorney: Ronald R.F. Stein Jr., R-Gallipolis Ferry. Magistrate: Incumbent Cheryl Miller Ross, Point Pleasant, Division I. Incumbent Gail L. Roush, Letart, Division II. John Machir, Point Pleasant, Division I.

Jeremy Grant, Southside, has filed for conservation district supervisor.
