It seems like just yesterday there were two buildings on the corner of 11th Street and Chillicothe Street in Portsmouth, but if you had to look twice the last time you drove by your eyes are not deceiving you. They’re gone.

“The demolition is just about complete,” developer Jeff Albrecht said. “We’re hopeful to be done by the end of next week - have the lot all the way done - have the blacktop all pealed off.”

Albrecht announced earlier in the year that a new CVS would be located at that corner, and eventually the entire block all the way to Gay Street would be developed as well.

“The site has a considerable amount of contamination from the gas tanks from years ago,” Albrecht said. “The next step is to start the remediation process. That’s going to take a while.”

Albrecht is reluctant to try to predict a date in which construction can begin since it depends on how long it takes workers to clean up the contamination. He said he has not received any more commitments from companies wanting to build or move into adjacent tracts.

“We’re still working on it - following up on leads,” Albrecht said. “We have nothing to report just yet. We’re getting close though.”

Albrecht said ever since demolition began, people have been asking questions as to how the project is progressing.

“Everything is looking good,” Albrecht said.
