MASON COUNTY — Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches —Monday, October 7 is Breast Cancer Awareness Day —and Anna Reno hopes that women who are in target age groups, 25-64, will take the time to get screened.

Reno, who is the health information specialist for several West Virginia counties, said that lack of insurance or poor insurance coverage need not be a deterrent to those who qualify under income guidelines.

“We try to reach uninsured or underinsured women,” Reno said. That means, she said, “Women whose deductibles are high or their insurance doesn’t cover pap smears or mammograms.”

Reno works as part of the West Viriginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program.

“We cover all the counties in the state,” she said.

Reno said that the program aims to provide screening for women ages 25-64 for pap, pelvic and clinical breast exam, sand 50-64 for mammograms.

“We also screen 40-49 year-olds if they are high risk — if the mother or grandmother had breast cancer,” said Reno, adding that if cancer or strong indications of cancer are found in an uninsured or underinsured individual, then a medical card may be obtained to use for the duration of treatment.

Reno said that Mason County Extension Office will hold a walk to raise money for the diagnostic and treatment fund, on October 13 starting at 2 p.m., in the parking lot at the Mason County court house in Point Pleasan, with registration before the event at 1 p.m

“Lori Wright of the Extension Office is organizing the walk,” Reno said.

“We’re trying to reach women particularly between the ages of 25 and 64,” Reno said. “When it is detected as early as possible, the survival rate is so much higher.

“We want people to know we’re here, and get them in and get them screened.”
