POINT PLEASANT — This could be the last year for Harmon Pool.
This week, Point Pleasant City Council voted to keep the pool open again this summer though there is the very real possibility this could be the pool’s last year of operation. The pool will open Friday, June 13 and close Aug. 3.
City pools are notorious money pits and as the culture has changed so has the significance and use of the municipal pool, at least in some areas. Harmon Pool, which council has said has had low attendance, has made no money for years and ended up costing the city $8,000 to operate last year. Also, this year the city did not receive what had become an annual donation of $5,000 from the Mason County Commission after the commission went though a particularly tight budget year - two tight budget years in fact.
As many on council put it, no one wants to be on the council that closes the pool but the fact remains it is a drain on finances and it leaks a tremendous amount of water underground. Whatever happens, council wants to give the public at least a year to digest this may be the last year for the pool while council members work on possible other options for replacing it as a summer recreational activity. There’s been talk of looking into placing a spray park at Krodel Park or building a smaller pool but that is all talk at this point.
Mayor Brian Billings said this year, the pool requires some minor pump house repair, the pool needs cleaned, the floor needs painted, the diving boards need checked as well because they are showing signs of “risk.” Billings said the boards will be taken down if they are determined to be a hazard - the pool must be inspected by the Mason County Health Department before it reopens each year.
One good thing, prices for the pool this year have not changed from 2013. They are as follows: children under five, $1; students five to 17, $3; adults, $4. Season passes - family up to four, $160, each additional family member $15; individual student, $75, individual adult, $85. Pool parties - one to 50 people, $150, 51-100 people, $200, pool parties are 7-9 p.m. weekdays and 5-7 Saturdays and Sundays.
The pool will be open noon to 5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
