RIO GRANDE, Ohio — After jumping up one spot to No. 8 in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, the University of Rio Grande men’s soccer team (3-1) will look to continue to validate that Top 10 ranking when they square off against Bryan College on Saturday, at 7 p.m., at Evan E. Davis Field.
Head coach Scott Morrissey’s squad continues a very challenging non-conference schedule as they return from an appearance in the Indiana Wesleyan Tournament last weekend.
The RedStorm (3-1) went 1-1 in that tournament with the lone victory coming from a double overtime triumph over Davenport University - the only blemish on the Panthers’ schedule thus far this season.
Rio fell on the final day of the tournament to the then-top-ranked Belhaven University by a count of 2-1 in a very physical match.
The RedStorm is led statistically by senior midfielder Maximiliano Viera (Montevideo, Uruguay) and sophomore forward Luiz Filho (Sao Paulo, Brazil), both of whom have six points on the season.
Filho leads the team in goals (3) and Viera is tied for the team lead in assists (2) and second of the team in goals (2).
The RedStorm have been the beneficiary of great balance this season, with seven different players recording goals and 13 different players collecting points in a match.
Bryan (4-0) is coming off of a 2-0 shutout on the road against Point University - their third shutout in four matches this season.
Daniel Branley has scored four of the team’s nine goals this season and is the only player on the Lions’ roster with more than one score. Zach McCown has a club-best two assists.
Josh Oldroyd has been in net for all but 6-1/2 minutes of the team’s four matches and has recorded a .900 save percentage with nine saves.
The RedStorm are 1-0-1 all-time against the Lions.
Live video of the match will be available at www.ihigh.com/redstorm beginning at 6:50 p.m.
