Point Pleasant blasts Bruins, 35-7

WELLSBURG, W.Va. — Four quarters of solid play leads the Big Blacks to yet another big win.
The Point Pleasant football team outgained host Brooke 355-to-209 Friday night en route to a 35-7 victory over the Bruins.
The Big Blacks (5-0) got on the board first with a three yard touchdown run by sophomore Cody Mitchell. Colin Peal added the extra point and PPHS led 7-0 at the 3:31 mark of the first quarter.
With just four seconds remaining in the first quarter Gage Buskirk found the endzone with a 10 yard run and, after the Peal extra point, put the Big Blacks ahead 14-0.
Point Pleasant increased its lead to 21-0 after Aden Yates connected with Chase Walton for an 81 yard touchdown at the 5:25 mark of the second quarter.
Brooke (1-5) quarterback Aaron Walker completed a 31 yard pass to Thomas Cole for a touchdown to put the Bruin on the board. Justin Loughrie added the point after and Brooke trailed 21-7 at halftime.
Nearly eight minutes into the second half Mitchell rambled 46 yard for his second touchdown of the game. Peal added his fourth point after and put the Big Blacks ahead 28-7.
With four minutes remaining in the game Walton ran into the endzone from two yards out, and with Peal’s kick, sealed the 35-7 victory for the Big Blacks.
Mitchell led Point Pleasant with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, pushing his season total to 655 yards on 76 carries. Walton had 39 rushing yards and a score on nine carries, while Gage Buskirk had 37 yards and a score on eight attempts.
Aden Yates was 6-of-7 passing for 146 yards and a touchdown. Walton caught four passes for 133 yards and a score, while Buskirk had one catch for eight yards and Jon Peterson caught one pass for five yards.
Nicholas Ossman had 50 yards on 15 rushes to lead the Bruins, followed by Loughrie with 20 yards on six carries and Chad Harper with four yards on one attempt.
Walker was 8-of-17 passing with 161 yards a touchdown and an interception. Thomas Cole led Brooke with 137 yards on five catches with a score. Joseph Staffileno had two catches for 14 yards, while Ossman had 10 yards on one catch.
As a team Point Pleasant held a 12-to-11 edge in first downs, a 209-to-48 advantage in rushing yards and a 2-to-3 advantage in turnovers. Brooke held a 161-to-146 advantage in the passing game and a 72-to-68 advantage in return yards.
PPHS had 5.4 yards per carry, while Brooke finished with 1.5 yards per carry. Yates had a completion percentage of over 85 percent, while the trio of BHS passers combined for a 40 percent completion percentage.
Through five games Point Pleasant has now given up 225 rushing yards, while compiling 1,423.
This game marks revenge for last season’s 34-33 BHS victory in Point Pleasant.
There are now five undefeated Class AAA schools, as Capital dropped a 24-10 decision to Huntington. The Highlanders, along with Point Pleasant, George Washington, Wheeling Park and Oak Hill are the five unbeatens.
PPHS will host the Red Devils of Oak Hill next week in a matchup of unbeatens.
