JACKSON, Ohio — Score one for the home team.

The Vinton County golf team worked the home-course advantage to its favor Monday afternoon while claiming a 4-stroke victory over the field during the first Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division match of the 2014 season.

The host Vikings posted a winning score of 198 on the back-9 at Franklin Valley Golf Course in Jackson County, which ended up being four shots ahead of both River Valley and Meigs — who originally tied for second with matching tallies of 202.

The Raiders, however, had a lower score from their fifth golfer than the Marauders — allowing RVHS to win the tiebreaker and claim sole possession of the runner-up spot.

Athens (211), Alexander (214), Wellston (224) and Nelsonville-York (254) rounded out the bottom four spots in the seven-team field.

River Valley junior Logan Sheets won medalist honors on the day after firing a 3-over par round of 40. Alec Boothe of VCHS was the overall runner-up with a 44.

Zach Morris came in behind Sheets with 52, while Evan Justis and Cliff Chapman respectively rounded out the team score with a 53 and a 57. Grant Gilmore fired the winning tiebreaker score of 57, while Cameron Marcum also chipped in a 72 for the Raiders.

Chase Whitlatch paced Meigs with a 47, followed by Evan George with a 49 and David Davis with a 50. Isaiah Ash completed the team scoring with a 56, while Parker Haggy and Levi Chapman each added respective rounds of 66.

The top four scores from the non-local teams were as follows.

— Alexander: Dallas Sweeney 47, Johnny Rupe 50, Kyle Holt 55 and Casey McDonald 62.

— Athens: Ryan McCarthy 46, Zach Howman 49, Zach Shrivers 51 and Jordan Dean 65.

— Nelsonville-York: Chase Koker 58, Ben Johnson 60, Stephen Bishop 62 and Tanner Smith 74.

— Vinton County: Alec Boothe 44, Austin Ward 45, Alex Dixon 53 and Tyler Barnett 56.

— Wellston: Blake Royster 54, Dakota Martin 54, Dylan Shaeffer 56 and Ken LeMaster 60.

After the first of seven rounds in TVC Ohio play, Vinton County currently sits in first place with a 6-0 league mark. RVHS is second at 5-1, while Meigs (4-2) and Athens (3-3) respectively sit in the third and fourth spots. Alexander (2-4), Wellston (1-5) and Nelsonville-York (0-6) round out the bottom three spots.
