Good vibes only, please

When it comes to positive energy, are you a giver or a taker?

Everywhere we go, our energy either adds to, or detracts from, those around us. I’m sure you can think of many wonderful people, whether friends, family or colleagues, who quite literally light up every room they enter. On the other side of the equation, there are those individuals who drift through the room like a dark cloud, seemingly on a mission to rain all over the unsuspecting happy people.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the positive energy of a group can be snuffed out by one negative individual. Encountering these good vibe killers feels a bit like stepping in gum on a hot summer day, while wearing flip flops, and the gum touches your foot. Too illustrative? You get the point. It’s a yucky feeling.

In the same way you shouldn’t spit your gum out on the sidewalk, you also shouldn’t litter little bits of negativity for the rest of us to try and step over or around. Even the happiest, most optimistic souls find this kind of social obstacle course exhausting. I often wonder if these negativity bringers are aware of the impact they have on others. Do they know they are ruining the moment, the party, someone’s day?

If you, like me, make a point to turn up the volume when it comes to joy and optimism, you’ve experienced “the look” you get from those who are clearly less enthusiastic about enthusiasm. Who cares? Radiate love and light for self and others anyway. When the room is darkened by joy thieves, flip the switch and shine.

Every single day, you get to decide how you see the world, as well as how the world sees you. When you exit the room, will you leave others feeling happy and inspired, or will you carry fragments of their joy with you when you go? The choice is yours. Please make the right one.

Nora Roberts, New York Times bestselling author, once wrote, “Dark will only swallow dark and deepen. The good and the light are the keenest weapons.”

Ready? Aim. Go set the world on fire!
