MERCERVILLE, Ohio — Making more than you miss is a good way to ensure victory.
The Gallia Academy girls basketball team did just that Thursday night as it shot 55 percent from the field en route to a 56-41 victory over Meigs in the opening round of the South Gallia Holiday Tournament.
The Blue Angels (4-6) connected on a trio of three-pointers to open the game on a 9-0 run. Meigs (2-7) out scored GAHS 8-to-6 over the remainder of the first period and trailed by seven.
Gallia Academy scored nine unanswered points to open the second quarter, expanding it’s lead to 24-8 with four minutes remaining in the half. Each team added four points before the half and the Blue Angels held the 16 point lead.
The first three minutes of the game were played evenly, as each team scored two points, but MHS closed the third quarter with a 14-to-4 run that cut the lead to just six points. The Blue Angels began to pull away in the fourth period and closed the game on a 6-0 run sealing the 56-41 victory.
“We can’t seem to put four quarters together,” Gallia Academy coach Renee Barnes said post game. “First half we looked pretty good and we come out in the third quarter cold as ice and it takes us a whole quarter to get back where we need to be.”
The Blue Angels were led by Kendra Barnes with 17 points and Chelsy Slone with 14. Micah Curfman finished with 10 points, Abby Wiseman notched seven and Hannah Loveday had six. Whitney Terry finished with two points to round out the GAHS total.
Loveday finished with a game-high seven rebounds to lead GAHS while Curfman led the way with seven assists and four steals. GAHS was successful on four three-point attempts, three of which came from Kendra Barnes, the other from Curfman.
The Lady Marauders were led by Brittany Krautter with 16 points on the night, followed by Kelsey Hudson with seven. Morgan Russell had six points, Ally Maxson added five, Delilah Fish notched three, while Tess Phelps and Hannah Cremeans each had two points. Phelps led Meigs with six rebounds in the game.
MHS connected on six three-pointers in the game led by Hudson and Krautter with two apiece. Maxson and Fish each hit one three-pointer.
“We got off to a slow start,” said Meigs coach Amber Ridenour. “We made some changes at the half and came back out making more shots and less turnovers. We’ve had several girls sick and that really hurt us tonight.”
The Blue Angels held a 23-to-20 advantage on the boards and a 19-to-20 advantage in turnovers. GAHS was 22-of-40 (55 percent) from the field, while Meigs was 16-of-54 (29.6 percent). GAHS shot 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the free throw line while MHS shot 3-of-4 (75 percent).
This is the lone meeting between these teams this season.
