The Mason County Sheriff’s Department also is getting ready for the event. They will be providing a police escort for the cyclists and those following the riders along a 10-mile stretch of highway that begins at the farm museum and ends at the Union Campground.
The event is the only fundraiser for the Union Campground Association which oversees the activities, upkeep and repairs at the campground. The funds also help maintain the grounds and ensure the buildings are kept in working order throughout the year. The desire of the association is to maintain the property and keep it free from additional costs, while allowing many organizations and churches to make use of the valuable, community property.
Registration will take place at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, with the ride beginning shortly after, around 9 a.m. Donations also are accepted at the time of registration. It is important when registering that you mention your church affiliation because the church with the most participation will be awarded with the rotating plaque to be placed in their church until next year’s ride.
Children under the age of 16 must wear a helmet and be accompanied by a responsible adult. The ride will end at the 10.1 mile mark at the Union Campground.
This event is the only fundraiser the campground holds each year. During their first annual ride, nearly 70 cyclists responded with their donations from personal sponsors and were able to help keep the Beacon of Light flickering. And last year, 40 cyclists showed up to help once again. The rotating plaque for most participants went to Krebs Chapel United Methodist Church.
All churches of every denomination, as well as community churches are welcome to join in on the fun event. This ride allows everyone to take part in a great, social atmosphere. It also will hopefully instill three things in the hearts of each bike rider: helping a century old camp meeting to continue God’s ministry; the enjoyment of a great social time with the knowledge and gratification that you can bicycle 10 miles; and the reaping of a tremendous blessing from God Almighty when the Glory is given to Him.
The camp meeting is held yearly in July and is the primary target for the donations gathered from the trail ride. The meeting begins July 11 and closes on the night of July 18. This year, two Evangelists Rev. Robert Fulton and Rev. Lee Ellis will be preaching throughout the busy week.
During the ride, the Mason County Sheriff’s Department will provide a police escort along the route. Also, a trailer/flat bed will follow for those who need to stop or rest. At the half-way point, Peniel United Methodist Church, cyclists will have a brief water and bathroom break. Upon arrival at the Union Campground, light snacks, cold watermelon and water will be served. Provisions also will be made to ensure each rider is taken back to the starting point at the farm museum.
Those is charge of the event encourage cyclists, men and women’s church youth groups and children to get involved in the third annual event. Sponsors also are encouraged to support those wishing to participate.
