CSX to replace crossings

POINT PLEASANT — For those who want to “cross the tracks” in Point Pleasant, the drive has gotten a little smoother in some spots.

CSX has temporarily patched and repaired some of the company’s railroad crossings in town after city officials appealed for help. In formal letters sent to CSX in November and in January, Mayor Brian Billings asked for help regarding the crossings at 12th and Main St., 22nd St., Oak St. and North Main St. and Poplar St. and North Main St. Less than a week after the second letter to CSX went out, the company patched three of the four crossings, leaving the 22nd St. crossing still in need of repair.

Robert Sullivan of CSX said the temporary patching would precede a track project which will take place over the summer in the area. At that time, all the crossings will be replaced.

“I am grateful on the response given to the railroad crossings by CSX,” Billings said. “I, along with City Clerk Amber Tatterson, went to look at the four crossings on Wednesday of last week. They look good and were easy to cross, except for the 22nd St. crossing which still needs work done to it.”

Billings said out of nine calls he received from citizens on Thursday of last week, six were to say thank you and to thank CSX for coming in and doing what they could at this time to help make travel across the crossings better and safer.

“As mayor and a citizen I want to thank CSX for their help and to prevent accidents or injury while crossing,” Billings said. “CSX is a good neighbor to our city and we will continue to work with them to see that all of our railroad crossings remain safe for all to travel across.”

The appeal to CSX for some sort of attention to these crossings came after area residents, as well as emergency responders, complained about these crossings. Those complaints were basically about the rough ride many experienced going over the crossings, with some residents saying their vehicles had sustained damage.
