POINT PLEASANT — The Point Pleasant River Museum’s Annual Tennis Tournament has a hot racket coming to town in the hands of Patrick Walker.

Who is Patrick Walker you ask? He’s one of the top tennis players in the state. He recently won the Charleston Public Courts Tournament (his sixth title win at the event) and the Michelob Light Ashland City Championships which he’s won for the seventh straight year.

Walker will begin his tournament play at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17 at the tennis courts near Point Pleasant Intermediate School (the Ordnance Courts).

Walker, who was born in Huntington, said he’s looking forward to coming to the tournament, meeting new people and of course, having some fun. Walker added he’s been playing tennis for the past 16 years, starting when he was 10 years old.

When talking to Walker, you get the sense he really loves what he does and is even a full-time coach at the Charleston Tennis Club.

Jack Fowler of the river museum said organizers were happy to get Walker to the tournament and are hoping he puts on quite the show during tournament play and even, possibly, an exhibition on Saturday.

The tournament began on Thursday night but continues at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17 and into Saturday, Aug. 18. The main court will be the courts new the intermediate school but tournament action will also take place at Harmon Park and the courts beside the office of Dr. M.C. Shah.

There are 27 players booked to play in the tournament with all proceeds benefiting the river museum. The matches will consist of singles, doubles and mixed doubles for players rated 2.5, 3.5, 4.0 and open class. The event is free to watch for spectators.
