Scam alerts
POINT PLEASANT — Point Pleasant Fire Department Chief Jeremy Bryant reports he and his department are receiving complaints from residents who are receiving calls from someone identifying themselves as the fire chief, asking the residents to allow this “fire chief” to enter their home and do an inspection.
Bryant said this is a scam and neither he, nor personnel from the PPVFD, are making these calls. Residents should not let anyone they are not familiar with into their homes and are asked to remain on high alert in order not to fall for this scam. Bryant said if residents receive this type of call or are approached with this type of request, please obtain the phone number the person is calling from. If the person is at at resident’s home, the resident is asked to take down a description of the person(s) and their vehicle, and report this to law enforcement or Bryant immediately.
Another scam which has been reported in Athens County, Ohio and Jackson County involves men knocking on doors, saying the are selling cleaning supplies or offering free carpet cleaning. The men attempt to gain entry into a person’s house to see if anything of value is inside with the plan to return and rob the residence when no one is home.
Arrests
The Mason County Sheriff’s Department reports the following arrests: Raymond Otting, Jr., 44, Point Pleasant, battery, arrested by Deputy Gilley. Greg A. Messer, 51, Southside, domestic battery, arrested by Sgt. Varian.
