CHARLESTON —Recently, young people involved in HI-Y in Mason County traveled to Charleston to participate in the 55th Annual West Virginia Youth in Government session at the capitol.
In all, 14 students from Wahama Junior/Senior High School and Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School took on the roles of supreme court justices, senators, house representatives, members of the press, and pages in a mock government.
Students presented bills they’d written for consideration and debated the Constitutionality of real-life court case decisions.
HI-Y is a volunteer organization that brings local youth together to improve their schools and communities, and offers away from home learning experiences with other young people across the state. HI-Y Youth initiate civic action and volunteer service with adult advice and mentoring. The opportunities provided by HI-Y open windows to the world as youth gain greater perspectives on their own talents, how their communities/ states/world work, and how to use their individual gifts to shape the future and serve their communities.
Group fundraisers are being planned throughout the summer and fall months to assist all HI-Y Youth wishing to participate in Leadership Camp, Youth in Government, and Fall Conference, as well as provide for community service activities. For more information, go to www.hi-y.org.
