POINT PLEASANT — Supporters of Point Pleasant High School Wrestling have an opportunity to become part of the program’s history - one brick at a time.
The PPHS Wrestling Boosters are attempting to build the program’s first facility on the campus of PPJ/SHS but are in desperate need of community donations to make it happen and a new way to raises those funds will be in the form of the purchase of personalized bricks.
These personalized bricks will be placed alongside others creating a path along the new PPHS Wrestling Building. Boosters are hoping to sell enough bricks to create a pathway leading all future champions to the doors of the new facility which will be home to a team which recently achieved three back-to-back state championship titles.
There are two bricks available for purchase - one for individuals and one for businesses.
The personalized brick for individuals is $65 and is 8” by 4” in size with one to three lines of engraving. The commercial or business brick costs $150 but is 8” by 8” in size with one to six lines of engraving. Each line contains 18-20 spaces (remember, spaces or blanks, count as line space and each line will be centered). For an additional $10, you can add clip art, and emblem, symbol or logo of your choice.
PPHS Wrestling Boosters, athletes and other volunteers have worked feverishly this month to get the new building under roof but more work, and more money, are needed to finish the job. PPHS Wrestling Coach John Bonecutter said approximately $15 - 20,000 is still needed to complete the building inside and out.
Earlier this year, the boosters set out on their quest to raise an estimated $37,000 to build an extension on to the existing locker room facility at PPJ/SHS - the wrestlers have been sharing this existing locker room space with the football team. Despite countless team and individual championships, the wrestling team basically has no real home of its own but that will hopefully change.
The plan to build on to the existing building was approved by the Mason County Board of Education and its first phase (roughly $32,000 for the initial construction of the building) received the green light from the W.Va. State Fire Marshal’s Office. The second phase (roughly $5,000) will include showers and restrooms. The entire project will be funded by the boosters and donations from the community - a community which is the integral piece in getting the facility built.
Bonecutter said the community has really responded to help get the ball rolling on the project but more is needed to finish. If enough funds are raised he said the building can be completely done in the fall, if not sooner.
Boosters say the building won’t just benefit wrestlers in high school but future team members currently in junior high and in the youth leagues - all of which will get to use the facility which will be built by and for the community.
