POINT PLEASANT — It’s always nice to get a break.

Spring break that is. This week, Mason County students are free from homework and teachers, and have been given some time to just relax. But with no assignments to keep them busy, some students may end up searching for something to do. Around 18 children from the area have turned to the Easter Day Camp at the Main Street Baptist Church.

Everyday this week from 1-2:30 p.m., children have been gathering at the church to participate in a variety of activities, such as water games, an Easter egg hunt, crafts and puppets, and Bible stories. Judy Sargent of the Main Street Baptist Church stated they do something like this for area children every year during spring break. In previous years, they’ve traveled to different places like the Aeronautical Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and the West Virginia Cultural Center and the Capital in Charleston.

“They not only learn more about the Lord and Easter, but it’s something fun to do,” Sargent said.

Sargent also expressed her gratitude for the members of the church for volunteering and supporting this program.

“They care about the kids,” Sargent said.

Also participating in the day camp were Nathan and Erin Sayre, who are missionaries with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF). Locally based out of Huntington and Charleston, CEF works with boys and girls in order to get them involved with their local churches, and focuses specifically on teaching the Bible. In addition to telling the children at the day camp Bible stories, Nathan Sayre stated they’ve worked with the Main Street Baptist Church before. They’ve worked the church’s Vacation Bible School for several years, as well as several special events like carnivals and parades, and they always look forward to it.

“We love being down in this area,” Nathan Sayre said.

Nathan Sayre went on to say they work with several area churches, as well as the elementary schools in Mason County. The facet of CEF that works in the schools is called the Good News Club. The Good News Club meets in various places like schools and community centers, and each week the children are presented a bible lesson including songs, memory verses, missions stories, and games based on the theme for that particular week.

Nathan Sayre stated that after April 16, every elementary school in Mason County will have an after school Good News Club. He also said there will be a Good News Club expo from 1-3 p.m. on May 5 at the Point Pleasant Junior Senior High School, which will have information about the Good News Club, as well as some other activities for children.
