POINT PLEASANT — The Mason County Courthouse is one of several courthouses West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Robin J. Davis is visiting to promote security measures within those facilities.
Along with W.Va. Supreme Court Director of Security Arthur Angus, Davis stopped at the Mason County Courthouse on Tuesday, meeting with several employees and touring the establishment. Led on the tour by Commissioner Rick Handley, Davis and Angus visited nearly every office in the four-story building, from the Assessors Office to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Davis said she was particularly impressed with the Family Court facility in the courthouse. Davis said she has toured other facilities across the state which could present some dangerous situations given the emotionally-charged nature of some family court proceedings.
Circuit Court Judge David Nibert, who also accompanied Davis for part of the tour, agreed, saying family court situations could easily get out of hand but unlike some other facilities across the state, Mason County Family Court is lucky to have its own bailiff to assist in any emergencies.
Nibert led Davis on a tour of Mason County Circuit Court, including the courtroom and adjacent offices as well as Magistrate Court.
Overall, Davis said she found the courthouse to be “well maintained,” and hoped her visit could help address any security issues to make the courthouse as safe as possible.
No major issues were found or reported on the tour though Angus and Davis felt an automatically locking door near the judge’s bench in family court should not remained disarmed. Handley agreed and said the commission would call the alarm company which services the courthouse to fix the issue.
This is Davis’ second visit to Mason County in five months. Last November, she held a special meeting on the issue of truancy in West Virginia in the Mason County Circuit Court Courtroom. Davis, a Democrat, is running for another term on the W.Va. Supreme Court of Appeals and will appear on the ballot in the May primary.
