KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A recent graduate of Point Pleasant High School, Wesley Davis, will be honored as a national Agriculture Future of America (AFA) Leader and Academic Scholar at the 2012 AFA Leader in Agriculture Award Dinner on Nov. 2, during the AFA Leaders Conference in Kansas City, Mo.
It was reported AFA Leaders Conference, which lasts from Nov. 1-4, brings together the top agriculture students with industry professionals and Davis will be one of over 500 other students from across the nation to attend this dinner. It was also stated that Davis is able to attend through the AFA Leader and Academic Scholarship, which will also go towards tuition costs for his freshman year at West Virginia University, where he is majoring in agribusiness management. During the conference, Davis will also be able to meet and work with his peers and other professionals to further the development of his career.
Also being honored during the conference is Howard G. Buffett, a farmer and philanthropist, and Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh, a Kansas State University professor and agriculture policy expert. Both Buffett and Flinchbaugh were reported to be the recipients of the AFA’s 2012 Leader in Agriculture Award. Both men will also share their stories with the students of their life’s work.
According to a release from the AFA, their mission is “to create partnerships that identify, encourage and support outstanding college men and women who are preparing for careers in the agriculture and food industry.” It was added that student participation in the last five years has increased 65 percent and the AFA programs have impacted nearly 9,000 students from 200 colleges and universities in 43 states since 1996, when the organization began.
