POINT PLEASANT — Customers waiting in the drive-thru at Little Caesars got more than they ordered Friday afternoon.

The accident, involving five vehicles, started when a pickup truck descending from the Bartow Jones Bridge apparently lost its brakes around 1 p.m. As the truck began to pick up speed, it barrelled through the intersection at Third Street, appearing to attempt to miss oncoming traffic on a busy Friday afternoon.

The pickup made a quick left turn, tires squealing into the Little Caesars parking lot on the side of the building where the drive-thru sits. At a high rate of speed, the pickup seemed to hit the elevated portion of the drive-thru, ramming into the side of a Chevy Silverado and an SUV behind the Silverado. According to eye witnesses, the combination of the elevated ramp and collision then caused the pickup to flip, landing on the driver’s side.

In a matter of seconds, the driver climbed out of the passenger side window and got out of the truck. The driver, who appeared to be a young man in his twenties, appeared unharmed and said his brakes failed.

The Silverado in the drive-thru contained an adult male and female child in the passenger seat — the male passenger was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The SUV contained at least a driver, but it was not known if anyone else was in the vehicle as of press time.

However, the damage was not contained to the Little Caesars’ parking lot with a Kia Sorento rear-ending a tractor trailer rig at the traffic light at Third Street and W.Va. 62. Both vehicles were headed south, waiting for the light to change to head across the bridge. Though an accident report on the incident was not available at press time, at least one witness speculated the driver of the Kia was reacting to the out-of-control pickup headed in their direction.

A fuel spill was contained by members of the Point Pleasant Fire Department, and emergency personnel from Mason County EMS were also on scene to treat patients.

All the information for this article is based on the accounts of witnesses. The accident remains under investigation by the Point Pleasant Police Department. No names or further, official details were available at press time.
