POINT PLEASANT — For many locals students, the decision of what career path to pursue following graduation may have just gotten a little easier.

The Mason County Career Center (MCCC) recently hosted a Post-Secondary Educational Opportunities Day, during which students were able to visit with area employers and learn about what opportunities are available whether they decide to go to a two- or four-year college program, or go directly into the workforce.

It was reported that the MCCC presents a “College Day” every year, where students can learn about traditional four year college programs that are available to pursue after high school. But according to County Career and Technical Education Director Ruth Caplinger, the job market in the coming years shows a need for employees with Associate and Technical Degrees, certifications, and/or apprenticeships. This year’s post-secondary day was reported as a success, with around 27 schools participating, and students from all three Mason County high schools, as well as the MCCC, attending.

“We want to let our students know about the many opportunities available for them,” Caplinger said. “Our Post-Secondary Education and Career Fair is intended to showcase other Post-Secondary Programs and potential employment opportunities.”

Some of the displays at the post-secondary day included representatives from the local carpenter and millwrights unions, as well as representatives from a beauty school, the WV State Police Academy, and community and technical colleges from West Virginia and the surrounding states. Representatives from other career centers were also present, providing information on programs not available at the MCCC, such as Dental Lab Tech, LPN, and HVAC. Students were also able to receive information on a new work study program which is being developed through a large corporation and Bridgemont Community and Technical College.

For more information about the programs available at the MCCC, call 304-675-3039.
