MASON COUNTY — On Monday afternoon, hundreds of balloons were released into the skies to kick off the “Week of the Young Child.”

200 balloons at Early Education Station alone were launched on Monday, according to Director Jane Haddox. Also at this launch site, a note card was also attached to each balloon which contained information on why the balloons were released. The information also included Early Education Station’s address in the hopes that some balloons would be returned so it can be determined where the balloon traveled after being released.

Balloon launches were also held at Magic Years Daycare and local elementary schools which have a preschool class.

The “Week of the Young Child” will continue in Mason County through Saturday, April 20, with several other events geared around young children and the importance of the first several years of person’s life.

At 6:30 p.m., tonight, Tuesday, April 15, there will be a community discussion titled “Making the Most of the First Three Years: How Can We Give Our Youngest Children a Good Start in Life?” This will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, there will be special events at Beale Elementary School, Magic Years Daycare, and Early Education Station, respectively.

Bringing the special week to a close will be the “Big Truck Day” from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 at the Mason County Career Center. Featured at the big truck day will be a race car, dump truck, semi, fire truck, National Guard truck, Sheriff, Ambulance, School Bus, ATV, Tractor, Back Hoe, and a “Life Flight” Helicopter.

The “Week of the Young Child” is presented by the Family Resource Network’s Early Childhood Team. Point Pleasant Mayor Brian Billings and City Clerk Amber Tatterson also signed a proclamation last week declaring this April 15-20 as the “Week of the Young Child.”
