Crews with Appalachian Electric Power work to restore power to residents and businesses in Point Pleasant on Monday afternoon following a vehicle crash which caused a power outage and closure of a portion of W.Va. 62.
POINT PLEASANT — Around 530 Appalachian Electric Power customers in Point Pleasant had their Memorial Day interrupted by a power outage.
According to Phil Moye, spokesperson for AEP out of Charleston, a vehicle hit a utility pole on Monday afternoon, causing the outage. The accident happened around 8th and Viand Streets.
Crews with AEP arrived on the scene and in order to replace the pole, had to take around 530 people off the grid to safely do the repair work which also involved a transformer.
As of 6:30 p.m. Monday evening, Moye said crews were working to get the majority of those thrown offline, around 430 customers, back up and running ASAP by transferring them to another power source. The remaining 100 customers should have power restored by around 9 p.m. Monday night, Moye said.
AEP took the customers offline around 4:30 p.m. to begin the repair work. Personnel with the West Virginia Division of Highways were also called to the scene to close a portion of W.Va. 62 through Point Pleasant. W.Va. 62 was closed between 6th and 12th Streets and should reopen Monday evening as soon as power is restored.
Attempts to obtain information about the accident were not successful as of press time.
