Farm to School program kicks off

On Tuesday, Mason County Schools kicked-off the Farm to School Program by serving a meal consisting of local Mason County ingredients. A special event was held at Leon Elementary School including several Mason County FFA members as well as visit from State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jorea Marple. As previously reported, this program will not only allow Mason County students to consume more locally grown products, but it will also help support local farmers and agriculture. The Board of Education recently purchased five steers for this meal from the Mason County Fair which were raised by local 4-H and FFA members, as well as Mason County wheat that was used to make hamburger buns. Other locally grown products that were served on Tuesday included potatoes, summer squash, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers. Pictured are Roosevelt Elementary students making their way through the lunch line and filling up their trays at the fruit and vegetable bar.
