‘Bash’ to benefit county fair

MASON COUNTY — Though August 5-10 is five months away, those who organize the fair are hard at work to make it better with the upcoming Mason County Fair Spring Prize Bash.

Recently, Mark Thompson of Thompson’s Hardware in New Haven, purchased the first ticket to the bash to be held from noon - 6 p.m., Saturday, May 18 at the Mason County Fairgrounds. Prize drawings will be happening every five minutes all day long.

This is the third event of its kind with the previous bash held last year and back in 2005. Last year, after expenses, the bash brought in around $25,000 which went back into needed maintenance and improvements to the largest county fair in West Virginia. Though the fair happens once a year, preparing for it is a year-round chore which costs money. These improvements also benefit not only fair goers but youth involved in FFA and 4H.

Tickets to the bash are $50 each but the entry fee entitles a person to the whole day of prize drawings and a chance to win over 70 prizes. Though countless prizes will be given away that day, there are two top prizes one lucky winner can choose from which are either a 2013 Polaris Side by Side Ranger XP or $10,000 cash.

Other prizes up for grabs are guns, more cash, Garmin and TomTom GPS systems, flatscreen televisions, Kindles, digital cameras, laptop, gift certificates to local businesses and countless other goodies.

There is a special early bird drawing for those who purchase tickets before April 18. These early birds will be entered into an additional drawing for $1,000 cash at 11:55 a.m., May 18 as well as the Bash’s other prize drawings which start at noon. The Mason County Fair Spring Bash will also provide a free hog roast and entertainment during the event. Also on Saturday, May 18, a professional corn hole tournament will take place on the fair grounds. The event starts at 11 a.m. and is sponsored by Cult of Cornhole. Call Dale Shobe at 304-895-3184 for more information.

Saturday will also offer three, free bouncy houses for the kids to enjoy at no extra cost.

On Friday, May 17, the night before the bash is also its own event with a concert featuring local bands at the fair grounds from 8 p.m. - midnight. There is a $5 admission fee for this event and a $25 fee for camping all night. Concessions will be available as well as cash drawings.

For more information about tickets for the bash or the pre-event concert and camping, call 304-675-4276.
