POINT PLEASANT — Things are looking up for kids interested in basketball and cheerleading.

Upward Sports, the world’s largest Christian sports league for kids, will open its first season in Point Pleasant starting at 9 a.m. this Saturday at Trinity U.M. Church Christian Community Center. The Upward Basketball and Cheer season was supposed to start last Saturday but had to be canceled due to weather.

Organizer Nathan Fowler said this new experience for kids in the area has been in the planning stage since June of last year. He explained there are around 70 kids signed up to play basketball and around 30 signed up to cheer on those on the court. Practices happen every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday with parent volunteers stepping in to teach not only athletic skills, but a Christian devotion or lesson during the practice. Practices are just one hour as are the games to keep things fun and easy for families with otherwise hectic schedules.

Upward Sports sets out to provide a fun sports experience based on healthy competition. It strives to help kids develop skills for the sports arena and values for life. Upward Sports uses the universal language of sports to connect with kids at a critical age and help them discover and build athletic skills, values, self-confidence and a life-long love of the game.

With the inaugural season underway in Point Pleasant, Fowler said he hopes the Upward Sports program acts as an outreach for kids and the community and brings something positive to the area.

Upward Sports is for kids in kindergarten though sixth grade.
