The Mason County Commission recently recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month which will include the Third Annual Walk for Women sponsored by the Mason County CEOS Clubs this Sunday. POINT PLEASANT — This Sunday, those affected by breast cancer will have a chance to fight back for a good cause during the Third Annual Walk for Women.
Registration for the walk begins at 1 p.m. with the actual walk starting at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14 in the Mason County Courthouse parking lot. The walk is sponsored and organized by the Mason County Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) Clubs with help from the Mason County Health Department.
Any donation is accepted to participate in the walk though a $25 registration fee is required to receive a commemorative t-shirt.
This year’s walk will include entertainment, an invocation from Pastor Boxer Swisher and guest speaker Wendy Lilly of Charlie’s Angels which raises funds for breast cancer awareness, community activities and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Lilly also lost her sister, Charlie, to breast cancer.
Lilly’s speech will precede the kickoff for the walk which begins at the courthouse parking lot and continues down Main Street to Tu-Endie-Wei State Park. The Kountry Kritters 4-H Club will be passing out free water to walkers in front of the Point Pleasant River Museum. Walkers will then walk back to the courthouse parking lot to complete the walk.
According to Lorrie Wright, WVU extension program assistant, the walk continues to grow each year with last year’s walk raising around $4,000. Every dollar raised at the walk benefits the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Diagnostic Fund.
Organizers hope the walk not only raises funds but raises community awareness about breast cancer and honors breast cancer survivors.
