POINT PLEASANT — Anyone with a pet will quickly say their four-legged friends are not merely animals who live with them, but members of the family, and there are several ways in which they can be treated like members of the family, including blessings.
The Christ Episcopal Church will be holding a Community Pet Blessing between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, at the church, which is located at 804 Main Street. There will also be an individual blessing from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday. Anyone who wishes to have their pet blessed are encouraged to bring not only their cats and dogs, but any pets to the church. It was stated that no pet is too large, small or unusual.
It was also reported that a freewill offering will be taken during the pet blessings. The money received from the offering, as well as a donation from the Christ Episcopal Church will go to benefit the Mason County Humane Society to care for homeless pets.
It was also requested for those attending the pet blessing that pets be either in a travel cage, on a leash or in the owner’s arms for the safety of other pets and owners present. Certificates will also be presented to commemorate the pet’s blessing.
The origin of pet blessings date back many years and first began in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and environment. Reportedly, St. Francis of Assisi had a great love for animals, particularly the larks around his hilltop town. He is also often quoted as writing “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.”
It was also stated it is customary for Catholic and Anglican churches to hold pet blessing ceremonies on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, which is Oct. 4.
