Regatta Queen to be chosen tonight

POINT PLEASANT — The 19th annual Point Pleasant Sternwheel Regatta Queen pageant is today at 6 p.m. in the historic State Theater.

This year’s pageant, “An Affair to Remember,” will feature a montage of James Bond music and plenty of action.

The general public is cordially invited and will be admitted free of charge. Over $2,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to the winners. The lucky lady crowned 2009 Sternwheel Regatta Queen will reign over the weekend’s festivities and compete in Charleston next January at the West Virginia Association of Fairs and Festivals Pageant.

This year’s queen will be selected from the following ladies:

Tabatha Marie Burrough is the daughter of Robbin and Kerry Burrough of Leon. She is a senior at Christ Academy.

Her school activities include yearbook committee, growth group, financial committee and prom committee. In the community, she babysits, mows for her church, and helps with Vacation Bible School for Leon United Methodist Church.

Hobbies and special interests include basketball, babysitting and helping people as much as she can.

Her future plans are to become a nurse, find a husband and settle down and start a family, as well as help her family with finances.

Lindsey Danielle Deem is the daughter of Dorinda Deem of Mason. She is a student at Wahama Junior/Senior High School.

In school, she is active in varsity softball, varsity cheerleading, secretary of FBLA, choir, and stats keeper for varsity basketball. In the community, she is active in her church, 4-H, FBLA and the American Legion.

Hobbies and special interests include softball, cheerleading, band, choir, basketball, gymnastics and lifting.

Her future goals are to pursue a career in the medical field as a nurse practitioner.

Meghann Hesson is the daughter of Craig Hesson and Angela Anderson of Point Pleasant. She is a sophomore at Marshall University, majoring in nursing.

Her school activities include being a member of the National Technical Honor Society, 2008 president of Health Occupations Students of America, and 2008 competitor at the HOSA National Competition at Dallas, Texas, in the nursing skills division.

She is a member of the First Church of God youth group, and is active in Revolutionary War reenactments for Battle Days and the Siege of Fort Randolph, and competing in local pageants. As for hobbies and special interests, she enjoys riding her Tennessee walking horse on leisurely strolls, reading novels by Nicholas Sparks and Jodi Picault, and surfing with her father. She also enjoys painting portraits and landscapes in addition to numerous other subjects.

Her future plans are to graduate from Marshall’s School of Nursing with a bachelor’s degree and become a registered nurse. She then plans to obtain her master’s degree and continue her education to be a certified nurse midwife.

Summer Denay Searls is the daughter of Randy and Lisa Searls of Gallipolis Ferry. She is a 2007 graduate of Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School and is a junior at Marshall University, majoring in secondary education.

She is a four-time consecutive dean’s list honoree at Marshall, and in the community, she has been active in Adopt-A-Highway, is a member of Gospel Lighthouse Church, church song leader, church camp leader, community ministry/”Temptations” skit, and Youth in Gospel Music participant.

Hobbies and interests include singing, softball, soccer, running, reading and photography.

Her future plans are to obtain a degree in secondary education for science and mathematics, and remain active in her community and church.

Jessie Wamsley is the daughter of Vicky Wamsley and John Wamsley of Point Pleasant. She is a graduate of Point Pleasant High Junior/Senior High School and is a freshman at Marshall Career and Technical College.

In school, she was active in the Heart of Appalachia Talent Search, Rhododendron Girls State, yearbook business manager, Black Knight Marching Band, concert band, ratings band, All-State tryout, Black Knight Revue, the Mothman play, jazz band, solo and ensemble ratings, and soloist of the band. She has been a daycare volunteer at Mason County Career Center.

Her hobbies and interests include reading, Emily Giffin novels, and spending time with family and friends.

Her future plans are to become a radiology technician.
