WAYNE, W.Va. — The streaks continue.

The Point Pleasant football team picked up its 26th straight victory while also winning its third consecutive decision over host Wayne Friday night during a convincing 64-8 decision in a Week 3 non-conference gridiron matchup at Pioneer Field in Wayne County.

The Big Blacks (3-0) handed the Pioneers their worst home defeat in over decade, as the guests churned out 535 yards of total offense while claiming an early 16-0 advantage through one quarter of play.

WHS (1-2) managed to cut that deficit in half early in the second period after Kyler Atkins hauled in a six-yard scoring pass from Jeremiah Milum at the 8:23 mark, making it a 16-8 contest.

PPHS, however, reeled off 48 unanswered points the rest of the way, allowing the Red, White and Black to pick up their first win at Wayne since the 2010 campaign. Point Pleasant also won last year’s meeting by a sizable 38-14 margin at OVB Field.

The Big Blacks finished the night plus-3 in turnover differential and also limited the hosts to a mere 225 yards of total offense — with 128 of those yards coming after the 30-8 halftime score. Point Pleasant claimed an 18-10 overall edge in first downs and outrushed WHS by a sizable 476-151 clip.

Grant Safford started the PPHS scoring at the 8:47 mark of the first following a 58-yard jaunt to paydirt, making it a 7-0 contest. Wayne followed with a bad snap on a punt, which resulted in the punter knocking the ball out of the endzone with 7:30 remaining for a 9-0 Point advantage.

Jason Wamsley increased the first quarter lead to 16-0 with a 25-yard run with 5:32 remaining in the opening canto.

After Wayne’s lone points were scored, the Big Blacks answered with a pair of Cody Mitchell scoring runs at 6:45 and 2:10 — allowing the guests to secure a 30-8 cushion at the break.

The Big Blacks outgained the hosts by a 312-97 overall margin in the first half, which included a whopping 297-33 edge in rushing. PPHS held a slim 8-6 edge in first downs at the half as well.

Garrett Litchfield opened the second half scoring by hauling in a 23-yard pass from Cason Payne with 7:06 left in the third, making it a 37-8 affair. Safford tacked on a 22-yard TD run with 3:56 left for a 43-8 edge, then Safford recovered a fumble in the endzone 13 seconds later for a 50-8 contest.

Sheb Harris wrapped up the third period scoring with an 86-yard TD run for a 57-8 lead, then Nathan Bowman closed out the scoring with 6:24 left in regulation following a 10-yard TD scamper. PPHS kicker Jason Schultz was also 8-of-9 on point-after tries.

PPHS rushed 29 times for 476 yards in the victory, an average of 16.4 yards per attempt. The Pioneers, conversely, mustered only 151 yards on 45 totes — an average of 3.4 yards.

Mitchell led the guests with nine carries for 188 yards, followed by Safford with 11 attempts for 143 yards. Harris also had 91 yards on three tries.

Mitchell was 2-of-5 passing for 22 yards and Payne finished the evening 2-of-3 passing for 37 yards. Wamsley led the wideouts with two grabs for 22 yards, while Litchfield hauled in one pass for 23 yards.

Logan Queen led Wayne in rushing with nine carries for 86 yards, followed by Cody Stiltner with 41 yards on 17 totes. Milum was 7-of-15 passing for 74 yards, with Jacob Cassidy leading the wideouts with two catches for 31 yards. Stiltner also had two receptions for 27 yards.

Point was flagged seven times for 55 yards, while the Pioneers were penalized eight times for 55 yards. Both teams punted twice in the contest, with PPHS claiming a small 33-32 edge in average yards.

Mitchell and Tannor Hill each had a sack for the Point defense. Wamsley came up with the team’s lone interception, while Litchfield recovered a fumble and Dakota Swann forced a fumble.

Point Pleasant returns to action Friday when it travels to Logan for a Week 4 girdiron matchup with the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m.
