MERCERVILLE, Ohio — It was a hard fought battle and a learning experience for both teams.

The South Gallia volleyball team beat Point Pleasant in consecutive games on Wednesday night in Gallia County. The Lady Rebels (4-5) had the match well in-hand, but the young Lady Knights (0-3) showed some fight early on in their season.

The Red and Black started off strong with a combined effort from junior Charli Leach and sophomore Breena Dotson to get the Lady Knights out to a 8-3 lead. South Gallia came back strong, thanks to senior Jayla Wolford, to give the Lady Rebels an 18-13 lead. The Red and Gold took Game 1 with a 25-17 win.

The Lady Rebels began the second game on a 4-0 run. The home team came roaring back with eight straight points off the serve from Mariah Hineman. The visiting team tried to establish a rhythm, but South Gallia didn’t let up as the Lady Rebels took Game 2 by a 25-15 count.

The Lady Knights were not ready to give up yet. Both teams traded the lead throughout the final set, until the Lady Knights were able to get positive momentum on their side. After a timeout, South Gallia came back and clinched the match with a 26-24 win during Game 3. There were 12 lead changes in the final set.

Kirstin Burnette led South Gallia with 23 service points, followed by Taylor Burnette with nine points. Erin Evans finished with seven points, while Hineman had four points. Caitlyn VanScoy had two points and Rachal Colburn had one point.

“I think the girls worked hard,” South Gallia coach Tracey Burnette said. “During that third game, I thought Point Pleasant played really well and I appreciate that. That shows a lot of dedication and a lot of bounce back. My girls, maybe, didn’t come out so strong, but I was really proud of how they finished the game and they pulled out the win.”

Point Pleasant was led by Leach with 14 service points, followed by Leah Cochran with 10 points. Becca Musgrave finished with seven points, while Dotson and Cierra Porter had six and five points respectively. Gracie Cottrill had four points, while Alexis Runion and Sarah Hjelseth had two points apiece. Mackenzie Freeman followed with one point.

“The girls worked hard and we’re building,” Point Pleasant coach Marla Cottrill said. “We have a lot of young people on the court and I think we’re starting to mesh together. We’re upset we didn’t come out the victors, but we’re okay. We’re going to come back.”
