Rio wins tri-match

MOUNT HOPE, W.Va. — The University of Rio Grande equaled it season-high winning streak at five straight following a pair of easy wins on Saturday in a triangular match at Appalachian Bible College’s Gilmore Gymnasium.

The RedStorm blasted Christendom (Va.) College 25-11, 25-13, 25-4, before routing the host Warriors 25-8, 25-6, 25-3.

Rio Grande improved its overall record to 15-4 with the sweep, while the Crusaders – who also defeated ABC – finished the day at 11-6 and the Warriors dropped to 7-10.

The RedStorm had as many service aces as they did attack errors (13) in the win over Christendom, tallying a .310 attack percentage.

Senior Alex Phillips (Orient, OH) had a team-high 10 kills and four blocks in the victory, while junior Kayla Briley (Marion, OH) had 31 assists and freshman Taylor Overly (Chillicothe, OH) finished with a career-high eight aces.

Junior Chandler Brown (Stockdale, OH) and sophomore Kylan Strausbaugh (Kingston, OH) added 25 and 11 digs, respectively.

Against Appalachian Bible College, it was sophomore Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) and junior Autumn Snider (Marion, OH) who led a dominating performance at the net for Rio.

Pelphrey had 11 kills and three blocks, while Snider had eight kills and a team-high five blocks. Head coach Billina Donaldson’s squad had just seven attack errors in the match – none in the third set – and finished with a .424 attack percentage.

Brown had a team-high 14 digs and five service aces, while Briley had 28 assists to go along with two aces and a pair of blocks.

Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Indiana University-East for a Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Newt Oliver Arena.

First serve for Tuesday’s match is set for 7 p.m.
