MERCERVILLE, Ohio — A good night for the Lady Rebels.

The South Galia volleyball team defeated visiting Belpre in consecutive games in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking division match-up on Monday night in Gallia County.

The Lady Rebels (10-10, 5-9) struggled a bit throughout the 3-set match with the Lady Golden Eagles, but the home squad found a way to achieve victory.

Both teams battled for the early advantage during Game 1. After the set was tied at 9-all, freshman Taylor Burnette got South Gallia out to a 13-9 lead, forcing Belpre to call a timeout. Trinidy King helped the Lady Golden Eagles to get within striking distance with three straight service points to make it 22-19. The Lady Rebels held on to take the first game 25-22.

Belpre started Game 2 on fire with five service points from Kaitlyn Hughes to give the visitors a 10-3 lead. South Gallia senior Caitlyn VanScoy got the Lady Rebels within three points before Belpre retook the advantage. Erin Evans got the Lady Rebels back on track with four points to give South Gallia a 21-15 lead. South Gallia finished the second game with a 25-19 win.

South Gallia got out to 5-2 lead early in Game 3 thanks to the efforts from Mariah Hineman and Courtney Haner. Belpre got within one point in the middle of the match, but the Lady Rebels continued to march forward with Hineman getting four service points to give the home team a 16-10 edge. Jayla Wolford sealed the match with three service points to give the Red and Gold the third game 25-16.

Hineman led South Gallia with nine service points, while Haner finished with eight points. Wolford had seven points, followed by VanScoy and Taylor Burnette with six points each. Evans and Taylor Burnette led with a team-high seven assists. Wolford had seven kills, while VanScoy and Haner had five kills each.

“The girls played hard,” Tracey Burnette said. “They were covering the floor really well. We made a few poor decisions, but, overall, I’m really proud of them. They always give me a lot of effort. We don’t always make the best decisions, but there is always a lot of effort and I appreciate it very much.”

Hughes led the Golden Eagles with eight service points, followed by King with seven points and Katie Osburn with four points.

The Lady Rebels will host their regular season finale against Miller on Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
