BIDWELL, Ohio — They went down swinging.

The Alexander volleyball team defeated host River Valley 3-1 during a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division match-up on Tuesday night in Gallia County. The Lady Raiders (4-15, 2-9 TVC Ohio) took it to the Lady Spartans early on, but the visitors adjusted and took home the victory.

The Lady Spartans started the contest with a 5-2 lead in Game 1. Senior Jacey Walter helped the Lady Raiders take the lead 8-7, forcing Alexander to call a timeout. Jacey Walter’s three points carried the Silver and Black to a 14-10 lead. The Lady Raiders maintained their lead and eventually took the first set 25-22.

Alexander made major adjustments during Game 2 and they took immediate effect. Maddie Kish started the set with a 5-0 run for the Lady Spartans, then Sydney Davis took over with a 10-0 run to put the home team in a 16-1 hole early. River Valley struggled to establish an offensive rhythm in the second game. Alexander took Game 2 25-15.

River Valley’s woes continued in Game 3. Davis took control of the match again with a 12-0 run to give the Lady Spartans an 18-2 edge. The Lady Raiders fell in the third set 25-8.

The Silver and Black began to come back in Game 4. After going down 18-14 in the middle of the set, Angel Toler’s five points gave the Lady Raiders the 19-18 lead. Despite the late rally from River Valley, the Lady Spartans held on to win the fourth set 25-22.

Alex Truance led Lady Raiders with 10 service points and eight kills. Gilmore, Smith and Toler each had five points, while Walter had three points. Jayanna Armstrong contributed two points for the Lady Raiders.

Walter had five kills to River Valley’s efforts, followed by Gilmore with three kills. Toler and Smith had two kills a piece, while Armstrong and Rachel Horner had one kill each.

Toler led with a team-high three aces for River Valley.

“It was outstanding to see the girls to band together and really play well,” Denise Toler said. “This was the best they’ve played in a couple of weeks. They were in it for each other, which is what we need to do to really compete. It was really great to see that.”

The Lady Raiders dropped their fifth match in a row. The Silver and Black were also defeated by Alexander 3-0 on Sept. 17.

River Valley will end the regular season on the road against Wellston on Thursday. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
