POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A tough way to end the last home game of the season.

The Parkersburg Catholic volleyball team defeated host Point Pleasant in consecutive games on Tuesday night in Mason County. The Lady Knights (7-16) put up a fight against the Lady Crusaders, but the home team ran out of steam during the match.

PCHS took the lead early in the Game 1, but sophomore Gracie Cottrill’s four consecutive service points tied the game at 9-all. Both teams traded the lead throughout the set, until the Lady Crusaders wrestled control of the game from the home team and won the first game 25-20.

The visitors started out Game 2 with a 5-0 advantage. Point Pleasant got within two points, but the Lady Crusaders hit their offensive stride. Despite four consecutive service points from Michaela Cottrill in the middle of the game, Parkersburg Catholic took the second game 25-13.

The Lady Knights fought back in Game 3. Leah Cochran got Point out to a 4-2 lead early in the set. PCHS retook control of the game to go up 11-5. Cottrill and Cierra Porter’s combined five points helped the home team tie the game at 12-all. The Lady Crusaders shifted the momentum back their way and took the third game 25-17.

Cottrill led the Lady Knights with seven service points, followed by Porter with five points. Cochran and Mackenzie Freeman each had three points, while Charli Leach and Alexis Runion had two points apiece.

“We came out thinking we would play better with them on our home court,” Point Pleasant coach Marla Cottrill said. “We did the first game and we couldn’t bring it together in the other games.”

Parkersburg Catholic defeated the Lady Knights in their previous meeting on Sept. 10 in Parkersburg.

Point Pleasant will travel to Wayne on Tuesday to face the Lady Pioneers and finish up the regular season at St. Albans against the Lady Red Dragons on Oct. 29. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m.
